Well folks, it’s official. After lots of prayerful consideration, I’ve resigned my position at SWOSU to begin shooting photography full time. It’s a huge, stressful step, but it’s exactly what I want.
I’ve absolutely loved my time at SWOSU–all 9 years of it. I started my SWOSU journey as a freshman in 2001, and ended it with 4 years as a recruiter for the Admissions and Recruitment Office. It’s been grand!
But on to bigger and better things. More importantly, on to following my passion and my heart. My interest in photography started about 4 years ago when my husband got me a new digital camera, and has continuously grown since; From the old Cannon G6 I used for my first few shoots of family and friends, to the current Canon 5D and multiple lenses, lighting equipment, and even a humble little studio in my home.
I finally reached a point where I was too busy with my photography business to continue working full time, but still hesitant that I’d have enough work to keep me consistently busy. At some point, you just have to take that blind step of faith. It’s nerve-wracking, unsettling, and thrilling all at the same time.
I was lucky to have also found a bit of a cushion. I worked out a deal with a local studio to contract out for them for school and event photos. They plan to keep me good and busy 2-3 days a week, which will leave plenty of time for me to grow my own business. Pretty perfect, huh?
So what does this mean for me? I have an additional 2-3 days a week for my own photography business where I can schedule weekday shoots, edit photos, reduce my processing time, and work on a better marketing and business plan. Oh, it also means I might get a few evenings and weekends back since that was when I did all of my editing. My husband will be happy about that!
So that’s the big announcement! Exciting, isn’t it? You bet it is. Now let’s get this party started!
